The Crabfeeder makes his entrance
The episode opens on a grim beach in the Stepstones, a chain of islands between Westeros and Essos. Crabs swarm over captured sailors staked out on the sand, left to be eaten alive. This is the calling card of Craghas Drahar, the Crabfeeder, a commander working for the Triarchy, an alliance of three Free Cities that wants control of the shipping lanes.
In the small council, Lord Corlys Velaryon, the Sea Snake and master of the royal fleet, demands action. His family’s fortune rides on that trade route. Viserys prefers caution, and the council brushes the threat aside. Rhaenyra, now the official heir, suggests a show of force with dragons, and the men at the table politely ignore her.
Rhaenyra picks her own knight
The council gives Rhaenyra a task it considers harmless: choose a knight to fill an open seat in the Kingsguard. Instead of picking a well-connected lord’s son, she chooses Ser Criston Cole (Fabien Frankel), the son of a steward from the Dornish Marches who impressed her at the tournament in episode 1. He’s the only candidate with real battle experience. The choice irritates the court, but it shows Rhaenyra values skill over status, and it brings Criston into her inner circle, a decision with huge consequences later.
Alicent becomes the king’s comfort
Otto Hightower keeps sending his daughter Alicent to keep the king company, officially to read to him. Alicent listens to Viserys talk about his grief and his love of Valyrian history, and she quietly arranges the repair of a dragon figurine from his prized model of Old Valyria. She also encourages him to talk with Rhaenyra about remarrying. Alicent seems sincere, but her father clearly has a plan.
Daemon seizes Dragonstone
Prince Daemon, stripped of his place as heir, isn’t sulking quietly. He occupies Dragonstone, the island fortress that traditionally belongs to the heir, steals a dragon egg meant for Viserys’s dead son, and announces he will marry his lover Mysaria (Sonoya Mizuno) as a second wife. It’s a deliberate provocation.
Otto sails to Dragonstone with a company of soldiers to retrieve the egg. Daemon blocks the causeway with his men and his dragon, Caraxes, and the standoff looks ready to turn bloody. Then Rhaenyra arrives on her dragon, Syrax, unannounced. She walks across the causeway alone, dares her uncle to kill her, and walks away with the egg. Daemon backs down and tosses it to her. It’s the episode’s best scene, and it proves Rhaenyra can handle a crisis better than the men around her, though Otto, embarrassed in front of his troops, won’t forget it.
A marriage proposal, and a shock announcement
The council agrees the king must remarry. Corlys and his wife, Princess Rhaenys (Eve Best), offer their 12-year-old daughter, Laena, joining House Targaryen and House Velaryon, the two great houses with Valyrian blood. On paper, it’s the logical match.
Viserys has other ideas. He announces that he will marry Alicent Hightower. The court is stunned, Rhaenyra feels betrayed by her best friend, and Corlys sees his family pushed away from the throne for the second time. In the final scene, he looks for a new ally and proposes a partnership with Daemon to clear the Crabfeeder out of the Stepstones.
What “The Rogue Prince” sets up
- The Velaryon grudge: Corlys, rejected twice, now acts independently of the crown.
- The Hightower rise: Otto gets his daughter onto the throne as queen, the first big step toward the greens.
- Rhaenyra and Alicent: Their friendship takes its first real crack.
- Criston Cole: Rhaenyra’s sworn shield becomes a key player in the seasons ahead.
Viewers who have read George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood will notice changes: the book places some of these events years apart, and the show gives Alicent a close friendship with Rhaenyra that the book never describes.
Our take on episode 2
Some viewers found “The Rogue Prince” slow after the bloody premiere, and it’s true that most of the action happens around council tables. But the episode does important work, and it gives Milly Alcock her first real showcase as a princess who keeps getting underestimated. Paddy Considine’s grieving Viserys, picking at an infected cut from the Iron Throne, also hints at the illness that will define his reign.
