Six years later: the new faces

The second time jump of the season brings in adult actors for the next generation. Tom Glynn-Carney now plays Prince Aegon, Ewan Mitchell plays an eyepatch-wearing Aemond, Phia Saban plays Helaena, and Harry Collett and Elliot Grihault play Jace and Luke. Bethany Antonia and Phoebe Campbell take over as Daemon’s daughters, Baela and Rhaena.

Rhaenyra and Daemon now have two young sons of their own, Aegon and Viserys, both with the silver Targaryen hair that Jace and Luke lack. Aegon has married his sister Helaena, and the couple has children of their own.

Vaemond makes his move

On Driftmark, Lord Corlys Velaryon lies gravely wounded after fighting in the Stepstones. His brother, Ser Vaemond Velaryon, sees his chance. If Corlys dies, the title of Lord of the Tides and command of the realm’s greatest fleet should pass to Luke, whom Corlys named heir. Vaemond insists that Luke has no Velaryon blood at all and plans to petition the crown to name him heir instead. Princess Rhaenys (Eve Best) warns him that the king has promised to take the tongue of anyone who questions the boys’ legitimacy.

Word reaches Dragonstone, and Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) and Daemon (Matt Smith) sail for King’s Landing to defend Luke’s claim. There, Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans) and Alicent (Olivia Cooke) effectively run the kingdom while Viserys wastes away, and they see Vaemond as a useful ally.

Aegon’s cruelty, and Alicent’s cover-up

The show makes clear that the greens’ candidate for king is a deeply flawed man. Alicent learns that Aegon raped Dyana, one of Helaena’s serving women. She listens with sympathy, then pays the woman off, warns her to stay quiet, and has her drink moon tea. Alicent’s fury at her son is real, but so is her willingness to bury his crimes to protect his claim. Aemond, meanwhile, has grown into a cold and formidable swordsman who bests Ser Criston Cole in the training yard.

The king’s last walk to the throne

Vaemond’s petition goes before the court with Otto seated on the Iron Throne. Before Otto can rule, the doors open and Viserys enters. Half his face hidden under a gold mask, barely able to walk, he refuses help and struggles step by step to the throne. When his crown slips off, Daemon picks it up and places it back on his brother’s head, a quiet moment of loyalty between two men who have fought for decades.

Rhaenyra then reveals her plan to betroth Jace to Baela and Luke to Rhaena, which unites the Velaryon and Targaryen bloodlines in the next generation. Rhaenys backs Luke, and Viserys confirms him as heir to Driftmark.

Vaemond refuses to accept it. He calls Jace and Luke bastards and Rhaenyra a whore in front of the entire court. Viserys draws his dagger and orders Vaemond’s tongue removed, but Daemon acts first, slicing through Vaemond’s head with his sword, Dark Sister.

A last supper

That night, Viserys brings both sides of his family together for dinner. He takes off his mask and pleads with them to put aside their grievances and love each other. For a moment, it works. Rhaenyra and Alicent exchange heartfelt toasts, and the adults let their guard down.

The children aren’t ready to forgive. After Viserys retires, Aemond raises a mocking toast to his “strong” nephews, a pointed reminder of the rumors about their real father. Jace lunges at him, and the dinner dissolves into a scuffle. Rhaenyra and her family leave for Dragonstone.

Viserys’s final words

Alone in his chambers and dazed by milk of the poppy, Viserys mistakes Alicent for Rhaenyra. He mumbles about Aegon the Conqueror’s prophetic dream, the “song of ice and fire” he once shared only with his heir. He means the ancient Aegon. Alicent hears her son’s name and believes her husband has finally changed his mind about the succession. King Viserys I Targaryen dies that night.

What works in episode 8

Director Geeta Vasant Patel stages the throne room scene with patience, letting Considine’s labored walk play out in nearly real time. Critics widely praised his performance; it’s the clearest example of the show’s best quality, which is sympathy for flawed people trapped by duty. The dinner scene is just as strong, because it shows how close this family came to peace.

The ending also departs cleverly from the book. In Fire & Blood, Viserys dies in his sleep, and Alicent’s later claim that he chose Aegon on his deathbed is treated with suspicion. By inventing the prophecy misunderstanding, the show gives Alicent a sincere reason to crown Aegon and makes the coming war a tragedy instead of a simple power grab.

What happens next, and where to watch

We don’t have separate recaps for episodes 9 and 10. In “The Green Council” (episode 9, October 16, 2022), the greens move fast to crown Aegon II before Rhaenyra hears of her father’s death. In the finale, “The Black Queen” (episode 10, October 23, 2022), Rhaenyra learns she has lost the throne, and a tragedy in the skies over Storm’s End makes war unavoidable. Our full House of the Dragon season 1 review covers both episodes and the season as a whole.

The story continues in season 2, which premiered on HBO in June 2024 with eight episodes covering the first battles of the Dance of the Dragons. Season 3 arrived in June 2026, and HBO has confirmed that season 4, expected in 2028, will be the last. Every season streams on HBO Max.
