Fire in the Stepstones
The episode opens at night on a Stepstones beach. A ship burns offshore while the masked Crabfeeder, Craghas Drahar, nails a captured sailor to a post for his crabs. The sailor curses him and promises dragon fire, and it arrives: Daemon swoops in on his dragon, Caraxes, and burns the beach. But the Crabfeeder’s men hide in caves where fire can’t reach, and they answer with a volley of arrows. One hits Daemon in the shoulder, and Caraxes retreats. Three years into this war, Daemon and Corlys Velaryon are losing.
A birthday hunt in the Kingswood
In King’s Landing, the court celebrates the second name day of Prince Aegon, Viserys and Alicent’s son, with a royal hunt. Alicent is pregnant again. Otto Hightower argues that sending help to the Stepstones now would make the crown look weak, and Viserys, more worried about where Rhaenyra has gone, lets the matter drop.
Rhaenyra wants no part of it. Alicent finds her reading alone under a weirwood tree, and their conversation shows how far their friendship has cooled. Rhaenyra joins the hunt only because her father commands it.
The suitor problem
The hunt doubles as a marriage market. Lord Jason Lannister (Jefferson Hall) flirts clumsily with Rhaenyra, who answers his introduction with “I gathered that from all the lions.” Lord Lyonel Strong suggests a better match: Laenor Velaryon, Corlys’s son, a pairing that would heal the Velaryon rift. Jason later tells Viserys he assumes Aegon will replace Rhaenyra as heir. Viserys shuts him down and warns that anyone who says so will be treated as a mutineer. Otto then suggests marrying Rhaenyra to Aegon, a toddler, and Viserys laughs him away.
The boar, the stag, and the white hart
Furious, Rhaenyra rides off with Ser Criston Cole. That night a boar charges them; Criston brings it down, and Rhaenyra finishes it with her dagger, stabbing it again and again through tears. Meanwhile, a drunk Viserys admits to Alicent that his belief in a prophecy led to Aemma’s death. The hunters announce they’ve cornered the legendary white hart, but the animal Viserys kills turns out to be an ordinary brown stag, and it takes a clumsy spear thrust to finish it.
The next morning, the real white hart, a symbol of a true monarch in Westeros, walks out of the trees in front of a blood-spattered Rhaenyra. Criston reaches for his sword, and Rhaenyra stops him with a quiet “No.” The stag disappears into the forest. The show doesn’t spell out the meaning, but the message is clear: the heir the realm keeps ignoring is the one the gods seem to favor.
Father and daughter make peace
Otto pushes Alicent to support Aegon’s claim, warning that the realm will fall if Rhaenyra rules. Alicent reminds him that the lords, their own house included, swore to Rhaenyra, but she agrees to work on the king. When a letter arrives from Corlys’s brother, Vaemond Velaryon, begging for help in the Stepstones, Alicent argues that the outcome matters to the realm, and Viserys finally agrees to send aid.
Viserys then has his most honest talk with Rhaenyra yet. He tells her to choose a husband she can love, as he loved her mother, and he swears on Aemma’s memory that Aegon will not replace her as heir. For now, Rhaenyra’s place is safe.
Daemon’s charge on the beach
In the Stepstones, Vaemond blames Daemon for the losses, and his men are close to mutiny. When a messenger arrives with word of the king’s aid, Daemon beats him. He won’t share this victory with his brother.
Instead, Daemon rows alone to the Crabfeeder’s beach under a white cloth and kneels as if to surrender. When the enemy soldiers approach, he draws a hidden blade and starts cutting through them. Arrows hit him, and the Triarchy forces pour out of the caves to finish him. That’s exactly what Daemon wanted. Corlys’s troops storm the beach, and Laenor Velaryon arrives on his dragon, Seasmoke, to burn the exposed army. Daemon follows the Crabfeeder into a cave and emerges dragging half of his body. The war is won, and Daemon earns it on his own terms.
Our take on episode 3
Greg Yaitanes directs both halves well. The hunt is all subtext and simmering resentment, and the beach battle delivers the scale fans missed in the first two episodes. Some critics found the three-year time jump disorienting, and the Crabfeeder exits after barely a word of dialogue, but the episode’s final shot of Daemon is one of the season’s most striking images. One note for lore fans: the show never reveals Seasmoke’s parentage, so ignore claims that tie him to Daenerys’s dragons.
