A failed husband hunt and a hero’s return

Rhaenyra spends the opening of the episode touring the realm to meet suitors, and it goes badly. One meeting ends with two rival suitors fighting with swords in front of her. She cuts the tour short and sails home to King’s Landing just as Daemon’s dragon, Caraxes, circles the city.

Fresh from his victory in the Stepstones, Daemon now calls himself King of the Narrow Sea. He walks into the throne room wearing a crown, kneels before Viserys, and offers it to him. The brothers embrace, and for a moment the family looks whole again. Alicent and Rhaenyra also patch up their friendship, at least on the surface.

Daemon’s lesson in freedom

Rhaenyra tells Daemon she dreads marriage. “My mother was made to produce heirs until it killed her,” she says, adding that she won’t suffer the same fate. Daemon tells her marriage is a political arrangement she can shape on her own terms.

That night, Rhaenyra finds a disguise and a map to a secret passage in her room. She slips out of the Red Keep with her uncle into Flea Bottom, the poorest and liveliest part of the city, full of fire breathers, acrobats, and food stalls. A street play about the succession shows the commoners cheering for young Aegon and mocking Rhaenyra as a weak heir, a hard lesson in how the public sees her.

The pleasure house

Daemon then takes her to a brothel, where they kiss and begin to have sex. He stops abruptly and leaves her there alone. Rhaenyra makes her way back to the castle, where Ser Criston Cole is guarding her door, unaware she ever left. She takes his helmet, draws him into her chambers, and sleeps with him, breaking his vow of chastity as a member of the Kingsguard.

The episode cuts to Viserys and Alicent in bed, a joyless scene that shows how little say the queen has in her own marriage. The contrast is deliberate: the show’s women all live inside rules written by men, and only Rhaenyra is starting to push back.

The scandal breaks

Rhaenyra’s Targaryen hair didn’t stay hidden all night. According to Wikipedia’s episode summary, a spy working for Mysaria, the White Worm, reports to Otto that the princess was seen in a brothel with Daemon. Otto tells the king. Alicent overhears and asks Rhaenyra directly; Rhaenyra swears she’s still a maiden, and Alicent believes her.

Viserys confronts Daemon, who doesn’t deny the rumor and instead asks to marry Rhaenyra himself. Viserys sees it as a grab for the throne and sends Daemon back to the Vale and the wife he despises.

Rhaenyra’s price, and Otto’s fall

Viserys tells Rhaenyra she must marry Laenor Velaryon, Corlys’s son and the dragon rider from episode 3, to repair the alliance with House Velaryon and silence the scandal. Rhaenyra agrees, but she turns the conversation on Otto: “And what will you do about the vulture that perches upon your throne?”

Her words land. Viserys concludes that Otto spread the story to push him into naming Aegon heir, and he remembers how Otto sent Alicent to him in his grief. He strips Otto of his position as Hand.

In the final scene, Grand Maester Mellos brings Rhaenyra a cup of tea, by the king’s order, to end any pregnancy. She drinks it. Viserys clearly believes more of the story than he admits.

What “King of the Narrow Sea” sets up

  • Rhaenyra and Laenor: Their marriage pact drives episode 5.
  • Otto’s exit: The greens lose their leader at court, for now.
  • Criston Cole: His broken vow becomes a dangerous secret.
  • Alicent’s trust: She believes Rhaenyra’s denial, which makes the eventual betrayal worse.

Our take on episode 4

Clare Kilner’s direction keeps the explicit content purposeful rather than gratuitous, and the uncle and niece relationship is meant to be uncomfortable; Targaryen incest is part of the source material. Some viewers will find it hard to watch. Still, the episode’s real strength is how a single rumor reshuffles the court, and Rhys Ifans makes Otto’s dismissal quietly devastating.
