A funeral at Driftmark
The whole royal family gathers on Driftmark to bury Laena Velaryon, who died in episode 6. Her uncle, Ser Vaemond Velaryon, delivers the eulogy in the misty cliffside ceremony, and his speech leans on the importance of Velaryon blood while Rhaenyra’s dark-haired sons stand nearby. Daemon (Matt Smith) laughs out loud during the service, which tells you how he grieves.
Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans) is back at Alicent’s side, and the funeral forces the two factions into the same room. Princess Rhaenys (Eve Best) blames Daemon for her daughter’s death, while Lord Corlys (Steve Toussaint) seems more focused on his house’s legacy than on his loss.
Rhaenyra and Daemon reunite
On the beach that evening, Rhaenyra (Emma D’Arcy) and Daemon trade condolences, and then accusations. She tells him he abandoned her years ago. The tension finally breaks, and the two sleep together on the shore. Targaryen tradition makes the uncle and niece pairing less shocking in-world than it is to viewers, but the scene also sets up the episode’s final act.
Aemond claims Vhagar
Aemond (Leo Ashton), still the only Targaryen child without a dragon, slips out at night to find Vhagar, Laena’s enormous mount and the oldest dragon alive. He wakes her, nearly gets roasted, and then calms her with commands in High Valyrian. Vhagar lets him climb into the saddle, and after a terrifying first flight, the boy and the dragon bond. It’s the most thrilling dragon sequence of the season, and it shifts the balance of power: whoever controls Vhagar controls the deadliest weapon in Westeros.
The fight on the beach
Laena’s daughter Rhaena had hoped to claim her mother’s dragon, and she confronts Aemond as soon as he lands, backed by her sister Baela and by Rhaenyra’s sons, Jace and Luke. The argument turns physical. Aemond holds his own against all four until he calls Jace and Luke bastards, sons of Harwin “Strong.” In the struggle that follows, Luke slashes Aemond across the face with a knife and takes his eye.
Director Miguel Sapochnik shoots the fight without any glamour, which makes it hard to watch. These are children, and they fight like their parents’ soldiers.
Alicent’s breaking point
The families gather in the hall at night to sort out what happened. Rhaenyra argues that her sons defended their honor against a vicious slander. Viserys (Paddy Considine) demands to know where Aemond heard the rumor, and the boy names his brother, Aegon. Viserys then declares that anyone who questions the legitimacy of Rhaenyra’s sons will lose their tongue.
Alicent wants justice: an eye for an eye, from Luke. When Viserys refuses, she snaps. She grabs the king’s Valyrian steel dagger from his belt and lunges toward Luke, and Rhaenyra steps in. Alicent slashes Rhaenyra’s arm. Otto watches with something close to pride, and Aemond later tells his mother he may have lost an eye but he gained a dragon.
Viserys also restores Otto as Hand of the King, which puts the greens back in control of the small council.
A death that isn’t
Rhaenyra knows her position at court is slipping. She asks Daemon to marry her, but she can’t remarry while Laenor (John Macmillan) lives. Earlier, Laenor offers to set aside his own happiness and devote himself to her cause, which makes what follows feel cruel at first.
That night, Laenor’s lover, Ser Qarl Correy, appears to kill him in the castle hall, and Corlys and Rhaenys find a burned body in the hearth. Rhaenys, who has now lost both of her children, is shattered. But the episode reveals the truth in its final minutes. Daemon arranged a decoy: a servant’s body took Laenor’s place, and Laenor, with his head shaved, sails away to Essos with Qarl to live a free life.
Rhaenyra and Daemon then marry on Dragonstone in a small Valyrian ceremony, with their children as witnesses.
What works, and the lighting problem
The hall confrontation is the show at its best: every major character in one room, years of resentment, and nobody willing to back down. Olivia Cooke’s unraveling Alicent is both frightening and sympathetic.
The changes to the book also pay off. In Fire & Blood, Laenor really dies, stabbed by Ser Qarl Correy at a fair in Spicetown, with rumors that Daemon paid for the killing. The show turns that murder into an escape, which keeps Rhaenyra and Daemon ruthless without making them monsters.
The biggest complaint at the time was visual. Many viewers said the night scenes were nearly black, and HBO responded that the darkness was an intentional creative choice.
